Gullah, Geechee and More
With strong ties to West Africa, the Gullah culture is still an integral part of the lives of the native islanders living on the coastal islands of South Carolina and Georgia. The Gullah culture, a blend of West African, European and Native American cultures, became the lifestyle of West African slaves isolated from the mainland. 300 years later, amongst a developed resort area, many of the traditions are still practiced today. Gullah is a rich and colorful culture celebrated through foods, crafts and religious practices. The Gullah culture is kept alive through vivid storytelling in the native tongue of Gullah. Through passionate prayers, sermons and tales, the Gullah people remember their past and look toward the future preservation of their cultures which is distinguished by the crafts of sweet grass basket sewing, quilt making and fish net weaving. Join us for several Festivals that promote the rich Gullah heritage of the Sea Islands. In February we have the Native Islander Gullah Celebration on Hilton Head Island. In May over Memorial Day weekend we have the Gullah Festival in Beaufort, South Carolina. Also in Beaufort, we celebrate Penn Center’s Heritage Day Festival the first weekend in November. In Charleston we have the Moja Arts Festival in October. Our tour destinations packages include Charleston, Beaufort, Daufuskie Island, and Savannah, Georgia.
